Named after the famous Isle of Skye, she’s every bit as majestic as her namesake. With her rare brindle colouring, she’s truly one of a kind. Skye is very friendly and loves nothing more than standing for a good grooming session—but she’s also our sassiest coo and won’t hesitate to let the farmer know if something isn’t quite to her liking!

Pheigi is our sookiest coo – she absolutely loves attention and would happily stand all day being brushed. She thinks she’s a wee dog, and when she gets excited to see us, she sometimes tries to jump up onto our laps… which can be quite alarming when you remember she’s a Highland cow!

Pheigi’s less confident half-sister (they share the same dad). She has a stunning dun coat and hails from the Isle of Uist, where Machair Anne’s family comes from. Her name comes from the “machair,” the sweet coastal grass found on the island’s shores. A true island beauty!

Her name means “fair” or “blonde” in Scottish Gaelic, and she’s our younger blonde coo with a bit of a wild streak! She was reared on the hills above us at “Cragganvallie” farm in Abriachan, and along with Moorag, she was one of the very first Highland cows to join the Farm Ness fold. On Monday 11th August, Mhairi Bhan made history by welcoming our very first calf born here at Farm Ness – the handsome Hamish MacBeth.

Reared alongside Mhairi Bhan on the hills of Cragganvallie farm in Abriachan, Moorag is a key member of the fold, ranking third in importance after Skye. She’s best friends with Skye and often waits patiently in the field when Skye heads off for grooming. Moorag is a little timid around people, but she loves the food pipe and is an expert at posing for photos, making her a favourite for visitors!​

Our matriarch! Iona is the top coo in the fold, and all the other cows know to move out of her way when she asserts herself. She’s also the friendliest coo and is usually the one we use for grooming sessions, though she’s currently on maternity leave. Iona is a gentle ruler, making sure everyone is cared for, safe, and gets a fair share of the food. Raised by Graham, one of the Farm Ness cattle handlers, on his farm in Drumnadrochit, Iona now proudly leads the Farm Ness fold. She’s due to have a calf any day, so keep your eyes peeled for the newest addition!

Our rising star! Jinty is the latest coo to join the hands-on experience. Calm and docile with people, she’s gentle yet confident—though younger and smaller than the bigger cows, she’s never afraid to stand her ground. Her rich red coat really makes her stand out in the field.

Did you know? Jinty McGinty is actually English! She was born in Durham… but shh! Don’t tell the other coos.
